Meet a Scientist

Have you ever thought about being a scientist when you get older? Do you want to know what being a scientist is all about? Then read on to find out more about our featured scientist, Professor William A. Howard.

Where do you work?
I am an assistant professor in Chemistry at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, where I teach college classes and do research.

Did you always want to be a scientist? Dr. Bill Howard
I have always loved science and learning, since I was a very young child. I can't imagine doing anything else! My love of science began while I was growing up in the 1970s. My favorite movie at that time was "Planet of the Apes", and it really sparked my interest in science.

What kinds of things to you do in your research?
I make new materials that could be used as medicines, and I try to understand how these medicines might work to make sick people feel better.

What do you like most about being a scientist?
I love discovering new things and learning every day.

What tips would you give to someone who would like to become a scientist?
Read books - fiction is as important as non-fiction. Obey your parents and stay out of trouble.

Make friends with other students who enjoy learning and who get good grades. Avoid students who get into trouble a lot; don't be friends with them!
