Welcome to the TASK GK-12 Website!
The National Science Foundation's Graduate Teaching Fellows in K-12 Education (GK-12) Program supports teaching fellowships for graduate and undergraduate students in the sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines.
The TASK GK-12 project at the University of Alaska Fairbanks participates in NSF's GK-12 program through the following activities:
-
Placing Fellows in Alaska K-8 Schools, in collaboration with partner teachers and UAF faculty mentors, to integrate advanced STEM concepts into elementary and middle school classrooms. Our Fellows are becoming better at communicating their scientific knowledge so that it is interesting and relevant to non-scientists, and strengthening their teaching skills by learning how to translate their content knowledge into inquiry based activities for students. By modeling academic success and intellectual passion, Fellows can foster aspirations for college-level education and new career choices in the students they interact with.
-
Providing teachers with an opportunity to enhance their understanding and skills in STEM subjects through extended interaction with, and direct support from, the GK-12 Fellows. This empowers teachers to more confidently conduct inquiry activities and take groups of students out into the field independently. TASK enriches possibilities for K-12 teachers by supplying sophisticated equipment, scientific resources, and travel funds.
-
Enriching the quality of students' lives by providing role models, improving their science literacy, and motivating them with knowledge of global issues. Students will leave the program better able to understand the complex scientific issues of today's world.
-
Web-accessible resources for fellows, students, and teachers.

Feel free to have a look around the site, and get
in touch if you have thoughts about how we can continue to bring
the exciting world of science, technology, engineering and math to K-12 Schools.
